Sufficient
I have been reading a book lately: The Soul of Money by Lynn Twist, and I have been embracing the word “sufficient” in an entirely new way.
What if I have enough? Already. What if I am coming from that place and I live my life from that place?
Then I am already my own inner space of sufficiency. I am enough, and that becomes the way my entire world operates. When I am grounded in that trust, there’s no need to go chasing after more. There’s no need to hurt others in order to acquire anything at all. No need for comparison or envy. There is no “dog eat dog” world out there demanding I compete for my piece of the pie. And there’s no need to burden myself with too much, either. No need to hoard. My heart can feel safe to open into sharing and into generosity. Twist says we don’t have to live in a “you or me” world. A “you and me” world is possible.
Twist tells us that when we see the world that way we can make a difference by using what is already here, and thus what is already here will flower. It will appreciate as we honor it, as we pay attention to the resources within ourselves and everywhere around us, resources that we have probably overlooked because we’ve been lost in negative thinking. As we value ourselves and what we have to offer, “what we appreciate appreciates,” she says. We can rest in sufficiency and lean in, rather than running toward the next thing we think we need to keep up with imagined expectations “out there”. Not only that, we can be a positive force in the world.
We think of money as a real thing. We buy it hook, line and sinker–until we’re so immersed in it we’re blind to any other way. We rarely question the way we see money, (or at least I haven’t) and we are drowning ourselves in our belief in it. Meanwhile, we made it up. We created money to serve us and it has become an ogre that has overtaken us. But there are still cultures in the world that don’t use money at all, and if we choose to, we can return to the tool money was intended to be instead of allowing it to rule us. Instead of turning inhumane and brutal against one another in the name of Money, we can become wise stewards. We can collaborate to create a better world. Can you imagine a world where there are not “haves” and “have nots”, instead, simply humans everywhere filled with creativity, capability and wisdom to share? Just people working on projects together. No “donors” or “recipients”, only collaborators? There are many beautiful examples of this in the book. Twist is a wonderful storyteller with a lot of experience that came from working for The Hunger Project.
Can you tell this book impacted me? These days I am leaning into the inspiration coming from these insights.
A message received from Spirit:
Trust that you are learning a new level of “sufficiency”. You are that. It is the very core of what you are, “enough” is what you are. The joy of your being is already enough. What you have is already enough. Blessings upon blessings. Generosity upon generosity. Do you see, Beloved? Open your eyes, my love, and smile.
You are sufficiency itself. No need to fight, hustle, scramble. Instead, rest. Breathe. What if there is no lack? No need to fight in the “dog eat dog” world you once imagined. Allow your eyes to open now–for it has never been so in truth. You bought a story you were sold. Your relationship with your world and with money has been based on a lie. My love, you are the resources you require. When you see that you will discover resources mirrored and multiplied all around you. You are the possibilities. You can unlock that freedom.
Remember yourself fully, my love. Allow yourself to share, to celebrate, to trust. Allow yourself to rest in the gentleness of “enough” right now. Now is already sufficient, already full. You are the Source of enough, and enough abounds everywhere. It is not “personal”, it’s not selective. It is not a matter of “mine” and “yours”. You have imagined your world that way. Another way can be seen. When your attitude is sufficiency, your attitude becomes generous. The heart becomes open and giving and wise and you are able to become a good steward of that which surrounds you. You are able to put yourself forward to make the world a better place with what is already present. You are able to get curious about possibilities.
Breathe and smile as you dive into a new way of thinking.
I’m not making money from this, I just want to share the book:
